Built & established in 1977 from bark-on cedar logs chinked with moss on the 40 acres, this camp is off the grid with a small pond called the "Bear Pond". Two permanent deer stands have been productive over the years. Partridge have also been abundant at times.
This is where I also create and build birch bark canoes, snowshoes and bark
basketry.
CAMP COON was established in MI U.P. 2000, was named after my daughter Cody the "Wild Coon". Located outside of Trout Creek, MI on "Moon Mt." It is 40 acres surrounded by the Ottawa National Forest. There is a nice cabin and garage and of course the mandatory "2-holer". We have a 2 acre clover plot and a water hole. Right now there are 4 of us that hunt the MI gun hunt but we could have up to 8 hunters and are looking for some to join us in the fine Yooper hunting tradition. In da U.P. there aren't many trophies......hell, we consider anything with a horn a trophy! We practice QDH (Quantity - Deer - Horns) the deer are scarce in dem dere woods and we save the QDM to our bowhunting woods where there are alot more deer and we can do some management. If you shoot a deer at CAMP COON it is quite an event!!!! The camaraderie is just as important as the hunt here. We normally get to camp a couple of days before Nov.15th and hunt until a day or so before the WI gun opener. Some years its 2 days some years its 7 or 8 days.
15 Members, several visits from family & friends during the season. Proud to say we have 4 generations visiting the cabin several times during the course of the season.
40 Acre Private Deer Camp with old small cabin...very secluded...1/4 mile off gravel road via 2 track lane...adjacent to 120 acres of state land...located in the Garden Peninsula...5 miles south of Garden & about 2 1/2 miles east of Fayette...the Peninsula is surrounded by Lake Michigan...Big Bay De Noc to the west & Lake Michigan to the east...the Peninsula is a mixture of Agricultural Farm Land & Heavily Wooded Land...this combination equals very good deer habitat...small food plot that needs replanting...2 nice enclosed stands and 2 ladder stands so far...I've also found a couple good spots on the adjacent state land to hunt...this is my first year on this camp...so I'm enjoying adventuring & learning the area...I'm looking for the right partner or 2...to help develop & hunt this camp with me...also would possibly consider a hunt swap???
